Hypnotic and moody, To You Mom’s darkwave-inflected synthpop is built around gorgeous melodic inflections and ethereal soundscapes.
A culmination of Luca Lorenzi’s and Massimiano Santoni’s shared interest in both maps and space, To You Mom: has its origins in a chance meeting between the duo at the Italy’s International Conference on Cartography and GIS Mapping. Lorenzi and Santoni initially collaborated on an EP titled ‘I Am Ian’ – a one-off project celebrating the stormy, extraordinary life of imaginary astronaut Ian Coleman – before embarking on a more permanent, long-term musical partnership.
In 2014, To You Mom: was solidified when Lorenzi and Santoni finally decided to leave other artistic mapping and space projects in order to give new life to To You Mom: they started perfecting the brand of broody, emotional electronic music that came so easily to them, influenced by both contemporary electronic music and an effortless aptitude for 90s melodies.
The 10 songs on their debut album, ‘We Are Lions’ are the most complete reflection of this aesthetic to date: coming across like a less sonically-extreme Cocteau Twins, but with the same odes to loss, longing and heartbreak dressed up in crystalline melodies. Buoyed by the rolling, cascading drums of Santoni’s production and the gleaming edges of Lorenzi’s unhurried vocals, ‘We Are Lions’ finds To You Mom: making small, sharp adjustments to its craft - tighter songwriting, more diffuse atmospherics and a fuller survey of their assured explorations of exquisite, warped, minor-key aesthetic.
